Photography is the new cooking
Is it just me or is everyone an amateur photographer now? You go to some event at church or wherever and you feel like somehow you got shoved into the press area because everyone has some expensive camera. Apparently they hand these out like welfare. ZING. As a hobby, it's about as unique as someone saying they like to cook (which I do). It's like these stay-at-home moms have all day to mess around with their kids and the camera and some of the pictures turn out looking decent. Big deal. Yes, I just went after stay-at-home moms. That means you, mom. But really, people need to branch out a bit. Leave photography to the photographers. No offense to anyone, like my father-in-law, who has been into photography for more than five minutes. No matter who you are, close-ups of flowers generally look good . . . because they're flowers. Happy snapping.

This is fantastic. My favorite is when the family blog is no longer good enough to post their photos so they create a new blog devoted entirely to their photography. And then they provide contact info in case you're interested in hiring them for a photo shoot. Um thanks, but I could get a friend of mine to snap some photos for free.
ReplyDeleteWith the new camera digital technology and ability to move images to computers, personal photography is ubiquitous. It is a good rant, Tim. "Hey, I used to be unique and pretty good; now everybody is good at it." Photography makes me happy, and I am not threatened by the advanced-amateurs. As a good chief, Tim, you cook very well; but you must realize that everybody cooks and sometimes they (those damn amateur wanna-be's)create pretty good stuff as well.
ReplyDeleteIt's true, they are given out for free...at least that's how we got ours. Thank goodness my dad has been an amateur photographer for about 40 years, and passes on his "old" (as in 3 years) cameras for our sake. Does it actually make my photos better? Nope. But it gives them a LOT of megapixels so if I wanted to blow up a poster-sized print, I now have the megapixels to make that work. :)
ReplyDeleteNo excuses Chelsea. I won't have it.
